In Loving Memory of Edward Renteria Mendoza

"The Legend"

There are lives that are measured in years, and there are lives that are measured by the people they forever change. Edward Renteria Mendoza was one of those rare individuals whose legacy cannot be measured by championships won, records broken, or titles held, but by the countless lives he touched through his unwavering love, quiet strength, generous heart, and steadfast belief in others.

Eddie was born on March 17, 1945, in Santa Paula, California, to Frank and Andrea Mendoza. A proud St. Patrick's Day baby, he was the youngest of the Mendoza children and the only sibling born in a hospital rather than at home, a distinction that became one of the many stories lovingly shared throughout the years. He graduated from Santa Paula High School with the Class of 1963 and remained deeply rooted in the town for years to come.

From 1965 to 1971, Eddie honorably served in the United States Military Reserve before dedicating many years of service at Point Mugu, where he built a career defined by hard work, integrity, and quiet dedication.

On September 14, 1965, Eddie married the love of his life, Anna Marie Mendoza. Together they shared nearly sixty-one years of marriage, building a home rooted in faith, loyalty, laughter, and unconditional love. Their marriage was a testament to enduring commitment, unwavering partnership, and family, creating a legacy that continues through the generations they nurtured together.

For decades, Eddie dedicated himself to mentoring young athletes through Little League, youth flag football, basketball, and one season of girls' softball. Whether coaching Barbara Webster flag football, Unity Baseball alongside Pete Sanchez, the Mendez Concrete teams, and countless others, he believed sports were about far more than winning, they were about building discipline, respect, accountability, teamwork, and family.

His teams earned numerous championships, including multiple state titles, but his greatest legacy lives on in the character of the young people he mentored and the generations of players who proudly continued to call him Coach.

If there was one gift that defined Eddie more than any accomplishment, it was his remarkable ability to make every person feel like they were his favorite.

His children felt it.

His grandchildren felt it.

His godsons felt it.

His family felt it.

His players felt it.

His friends felt it.

Every person fortunate enough to know Eddie walked away believing they held a special place in his heart. The remarkable truth is that they all did.

His greatest joy in life was his family. He never missed an opportunity to support those he loved, faithfully attending his grandchildren's games, performances, and milestones. He celebrated every accomplishment as if it were his own and found immense happiness simply by being present. His love was not expressed through grand gestures but through consistency, sacrifice, laughter, and showing up, every single time.

Eddie also embraced life's simple pleasures. He loved backyard barbecues surrounded by family, listening to his favorite records, and cheering passionately for the New York Yankees, UCLA Bruins, the Los Angeles Lakers, and Stetson softball. Those closest to him knew that beneath his legendary coaching career and lifelong love of sports was someone who never took himself too seriously. He could find humor in just about anything, and one of his favorite guilty pleasures was Bravo's The Real Housewives, never missing an opportunity to cheer on his favorite, Teresa from New Jersey. His quick wit, playful sarcasm, and infectious sense of humor could brighten any room.

Eddie passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in Santa Paula, California, on July 23, 2026, surrounded by the love he had so generously given throughout his life.

He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Anna Marie Mendoza; his children, Edward James Mendoza, Christine Mendoza Diaz and husband Gabe Diaz, and Samuel Mendoza; his beloved grandchildren, Brittney Mendoza, Larissa Mendoza, Gabriel Diaz, Danielle Diaz, and Brandee Diaz; and his treasured great-grandson, Dominic Legend Diaz, who proudly carries the name "Legend" in honor of the extraordinary man whose love and legacy will continue through generations to come.

He is also survived by his beloved cousin, Adrie Abdelkarim and her husband, Sammy Abdelkarim; numerous nieces, nephews, grand-dogs, cherished godsons, extended family members, lifelong friends, former players, and countless individuals whose lives were forever changed by his kindness, guidance, humor, and unwavering encouragement.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Andrea Mendoza; his beloved sister, Evelyn Porras, and her husband, Pilo Porras; his brother, Frank Mendoza, and sister-in-law, Irene Mendoza; his brother, Albert Mendoza; his in-laws, Manuel and Carmen Escoto; and all those dear family members and friends who welcomed him into eternal peace. He was the last surviving sibling of the Mendoza family and is lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law, Maryanne Mendoza.

The Mendoza family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team at Assisted Hospice especially Breanna, Gonzalo, Rosario, and Pam for the exceptional care, comfort, and kindness they provided during Eddie's final journey. The family also expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr. Michael Tushla for his years of dedicated medical care, compassion, and friendship.

A special and everlasting thank you is extended to Eddie's beloved niece, Andrea Porras "Sits", and nephew, Javier Cortez, whose unwavering love, daily presence, and selfless devotion throughout this journey became an extraordinary blessing to their "Uncle Dwardy" and to the entire Mendoza family. Their kindness, strength, and steadfast support will forever remain a cherished part of his story.

Although his voice has grown quiet, Eddie's lessons continue to echo in every player who learned from him, every child who looked to him for encouragement, every family gathering filled with laughter, and every heart made stronger simply because he was part of it.

Some people leave behind memories.

Eddie left a legacy.

He will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, loyal friend, trusted mentor, cherished coach, and, to all who were blessed to know him, simply and forever…
