James "Jim" Van Voorhis passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on August 7, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, to James and Mary Van Voorhis.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Leticia, whom he met by chance at a Mervyn's store — a moment that began a lifelong love story.  He is also survived by his sons, Sergio Lopez and wife Katherine, and Andy Lopez; his beloved grandchildren, Emma and Ezekiel; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Jim Bradford, Virginia and William Alger, and Mary Ann and Terrell Cryer; as well as many nieces and nephews to whom he was a very special uncle, and the extended Gutierrez family. He is also survived by his dog Coco, his loyal companion with whom he had a special bond with.

Jim grew up in the San Fernando Valley, graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1980, and attended Pierce College. He dedicated his life to public service, beginning his career with the City of Los Angeles as a building inspector for five years before serving more than 30 years with the County of Ventura in the Building and Safety Department and Public Works Agency.  He took great pride in his work and genuinely cared about the residents of Ventura County.   He was generous with his time, always sharing his knowledge and mentoring others, connecting with them through his gift of conversation and storytelling.  Even after retiring in 2023, Jim continued contract work for the County, reflecting his strong work ethic, dedication, and sense of responsibility.

Jim had a lifelong passion for air-cooled Volkswagens, especially the Type 2 bus. He loved the beach, fishing, good food, cooking, his family, and his beloved adopted hometown of San Buenaventura.  Above all, Jim was known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help family, friends, neighbors, and anyone in need.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
