John Robert Cabacungan

December 20, 1940 – August 28, 2026

John Robert Cabacungan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 28, 2026, at the age of 85. John had remained active and was not ill, making his passing peaceful and unexpected.

Born on December 20, 1940, in Guadalupe, California, John moved to San Jose, California as a child and spent most of his life there. Later in life, he made his home in Santa Paula, California.

In 1958, John married Barbara Jones. Together, they built a family and shared many years of life together.

John was a longtime member of the Filipino Assembly of the First Born, where he was active for many years. His faith and his connection to his church community were an important part of his life.

Throughout his working years, John held various jobs, including working for Ford Motor Company. He later owned and operated his own automotive repair business, putting his mechanical skills to work.

After retirement, John continued to give his time generously to those around him. He helped neighbors with home repairs and automobile repairs, gave people rides to the airport or to medical appointments, and was always happy to simply sit down and have a conversation. He never saw a stranger.

Those who knew him will remember his unmistakable, one-of-a-kind laugh, his friendly nature, and his willingness to help others without expecting anything in return.

John also loved spending time in his garden. He could spend many hours tending to it, talking about his plants and enjoying the fruits of his labor. True to his generous spirit, he loved sharing what he grew with family, friends, and neighbors.

He enjoyed car racing and was a fan of sports, especially the San Francisco Giants and the San Francisco 49ers.

John leaves behind his beloved family, including his wife, Barbara, and his four children: Paula (Gene Segno), Michael, Thomas(Corinna), and Sandra (Parcher). He was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Wanda and his brothers James(Patty) and Richard(Carole).

He was preceded in death by his father, Juan; his mother, Wilma; his brother, Art; his sisters, Geraldine and Joyce; his son, Robert; and his grandchildren, Jennifer and Mark.

John’s life was defined not only by the family he loved, but by the many people he helped along the way. His kindness, humor, generosity, stories, laughter, and willingness to lend a hand touched countless lives.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors, church community, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest peacefully, Dad. Your laughter, kindness, and helping hands will live on in all those who knew and loved you.
