John David
Ruiz
Jun 17, 1958 — Jun 14, 2025
After a lifelong battle with alcoholism, John Ruiz passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, with his daughters, his godson, and his compás at his side.
John was born on June 17, 1958, to Richard and Elvera Ruiz. A lifelong Santa Paulan, John graduated from Santa Paula High School in 1976. It was there he met the love of his life, Rachel Carranco. Their love was one for the ages, and they married in 1979. Together, they had three daughters before Rachel's passing in 1987.
John was a dedicated worker and spent many years serving the community through his work with Caltrans and the County of Ventura. He had a deep love for his hometown and could often be seen riding his bicycle around Santa Paula, greeting familiar faces, and soaking in the place he called home. He loved attending Cruise Night, enjoying a cold drink at The Draft or La Cabaña, and simply being part of the community's rhythm.
John had a heart for helping others and was always willing to lend a hand. Whether it was helping someone move, mowing a lawn, fixing something broken, or tackling a last-minute project, John showed up — no questions asked. All he ever wanted in return was a cold Bud Light and good company. His generous spirit, quick wit, and hardworking hands made him a true friend to many.
More than anything, John was known for his infectious energy, warm laugh, and larger-than-life personality. He was truly the life of the party and cherished time spent with his friends and family. Whether playing horseshoes, sharing stories, watching the Dodgers, or dancing into the night, John lived for those joyful moments.
He is preceded in death by his father, Richard; the love of his life, Rachel; his best friend and baby brother, Daniel; his grandson, Vincent; nephews DJ and Keshaun; compa Ben; his beloved dog, Buttkiss; and numerous aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his mother, Elvera; siblings Mary Mata, Richard (Jeanie) Ruiz, and Connie (Marvin) Guy; daughters Cecilia (Sam) Ramirez, Mallory (Gene) Langley, Nikole (Jonathan) Sandoval, Marie (Alex) Hernandez, and Angela (Jay) Alvarez; grandchildren Taliya Mata, Ava and Andrew Ramirez, Kaliya Langley, Jurae, Robinson, and Charlene Sandoval, Savannah Benavidez, Alexis (Andrez) Vigil, Vincent Alvarez, Selena Martinez, Isabel Martinez, Javier Martinez, and Cherish Hernandez; great-grandchildren Valen Abdul Malik, Vey Abdul Malik, Jayce, and Ella Carillo; godsons Rick Vaiz, Richard Ruiz, and Christopher Monen; along with countless nieces, nephews, compas, and friends who will carry his memory with love and laughter.
