It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leo Gonzalo Alvarez, affectionately known as "Chalo" on August 23, 2025, surrounded by loved ones in Oxnard, California shortly after his 92nd birthday.   Leo was born on July 22, 1933, in Santa Paula, California, and passed away in his home in the City of Oxnard, surrounded by his wife, Jane, and family members.

Leo's gentle spirit, unwavering integrity, and devotion to his family, community and justice for children leave a legacy that will long be remembered.

Leo was blessed with a very large blended and loving family.  Leo was a father to 4 children from his first marriage – Charles (Sue), Patricia, Debra, and Eric.  He had 5 stepchildren from his second marriage – Rudy (Susana), Russell (Heather), Ken, Liz (Troy), and Jon (Kaylin).  He was the grandfather to 8 grandsons, Tim (Laurie), Christian, Rudy III., Jacob, Joshua, Greyson, Dean, Caleb, 3 granddaughters, Melanie (Bobby), Alicia (Mack), Karina (Steven), Rosie and 5 great-great grandsons, Morrison, Ronin, Jones, Arlin, Akinli and 3 great granddaughters Ezra, Elaina and Liliana.

He and his grandchildren often went to Mammoth Lakes because of his love of fishing. Leo enjoyed many activities throughout his life.  Other activities included camping, basketball, and running.  He participated in 10K runs and marathons.  He enjoyed going to the gym and staying physically fit.  His true joy came from spending time making memories with his family and friends, as well as helping to change the lives of others for the better.

Leo's distinguished career began when he proudly served his country in the United States Army before becoming a Coroner Investigator.  He was a professional photographer and worked as a crime scene investigator early in his police career.  He later dedicated over 33 years to the Oxnard Police Department as a Senior Police Services Officer, managing the jail.

After retiring from the Oxnard Police Department, he became the President of The Ventura County Crime Stoppers Program, alongside Robert Worthley.  He worked closely with many police departments and the Sheriff's Department as well as The Ventura County Star Newspaper by posting mug shots of the Most Wanted Suspects in Ventura County.  Other departments throughout California followed Leo's lead.

After retiring, Leo helped create the organization,  The Children's Wall of Tears ™, with his wife, Jane in Oxnard, California.  Not only was it one of the first traveling monuments to raise awareness of children killed by their abusers throughout the United States, but internationally as well, as Leo, Jane, and Pauline traveled the nation.  Leo worked with numerous Legislators to change existing laws that would no longer permit children to be reunified with their abusers.  Leo, Jane, and Pauline worked closely with BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) …protecting the rights of children.  Leo served as the President of The Children's Wall of Tears, exemplifying his dedication and lifelong commitment for justice for abused children.
