It is with great sadness that the family of Porfirio "Pilo" Porras announce his passing. He died on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025. He was 92 years old. Pilo, as he was known to family and friends alike, was born on Wednesday, January 18, 1933, in El Paso, Texas, to parents Arturo and Guadalupe Porras. He was the second of eight children, growing up with four brothers and three sisters. After the family moved from Texas to California, Pilo attended elementary school in Santa Paula, California, as well as Santa Paula Union High School. While in high school, he excelled on the gymnastics team, succeeding at the rope climb from the seated position. He graduated from high school in 1951. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country during the Korean War. He was an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Crewman while stationed in Germany. Pilo was honorably discharged from service in October 1955, having achieved the rank of Sergeant. Pilo, with a smile on his face, could make anyone feel like a friend by relating stories from his youth. He told stories of hiking the local mountains, playing in Santa Paula Creek with friends, riding his horse, and taking road trips around California to visit relatives. He met his future wife, Evelyn "Tootsie" Renteria Mendoza as children through his good friend and eventual brother-in-law, Frank "Roxy" Mendoza. Years later, after returning from the Army, Pilo and Tootsie were married on Saturday, September 30, 1972. They were married for over 49 years until her passing in January of 2022. They had two children, a son, Porfirio "Punky" Porras, and a daughter, Andrea "Sitsie" Porras. The love and support Pilo and Tootsie showed their kids was invaluable when it came to all things, including extracurricular activities and their education. Pilo and Tootsie loved to go on vacation with their children to Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Disneyland, and numerous celebrations with family near and far. There was also an epic cross-country road trip from Santa Paula to Walt Disney World and back. Pilo supported his family by working in the construction industry for decades. He became a licensed contractor and would go on to found his own company known as P & S Concrete. He built everything from driveways to brick walls to houses, including the Santa Paula home he and Tootsie raised their family in. Pilo's most important job was that of "Tata" to his granddaughters, Alexandrea "Alex" Acosta and Gabrielle "Nuggy" Cortez, as well as great-granddaughter, Sophia "Sophie" Lira. He and Tootsie would read to them, watch videos together, drop off and pick them up from school, attend every spelling bee, band recital, sporting event and awards ceremony their girls participated in; and were never happier than when they were cheering on their girls in any activity in which they were involved. What's more, they were always grateful for the generous amount of love and support they received, and all he did for their girls, from son-in-law Javier "Junior" Cortez. Pilo is preceded in death by wife Evelyn R. Mendoza Porras; parents-in-law Frank and Andrea Mendoza; sister-in-law Irene Mendoza; and brother-in-law Albert Mendoza. Pilo is also preceded in death by his parents, Arturo and Guadalupe Porras; brother Arthur Porras; sister-in-law Margie Porras; sister Maria and brother-in-law Albert Antunez; and sister Velia Porras Newport. He will be mourned by his children, Porfirio M. Porras and Andrea M. Porras son-in-law Javier Cortez Jr.; brother-in-law Frank (Irene) Mendoza; sister-in-law Mary Ann (Albert) Mendoza; brother and sister-in-law Edward and Annie Mendoza; and most especially by granddaughters Alexandrea P. Acosta and Gabrielle P. Cortez; and great-granddaughter Sophia E. Lira. Additionally, he is survived by sister-in-law Alice (Arthur) Porras; brother Artemio (Margie) Porras; sister Patricia (Robert) Whiteside; brother Henry (Katie) Porras; and brother Richard (Anna) Porras.
