Shirley Jean
Hayes
Dec 21, 1942 — Oct 1, 2024
Ladies, gentlemen, family, and friends, we gather here today not under a shadow of sorrow but beneath the luminance of a remarkable woman's legacy. Shirley, my beloved mother, was a beacon of joy, generosity, and understanding in a world that often lacks such warmth. At 81 years old, she departed from us, leaving behind not just memories but a blueprint on how to live life fully, cherish community, and embrace every moment with open arms and an open heart.
Let's start by painting a picture of Shirley: fun-loving, generous, understanding—three words that encapsulate her essence but barely scratch the surface of her profound impact. I remember once, the atmosphere at Shirley's house—her sanctuary—was electrifying with warmth. Her home wasn't just a structure of four walls but a haven for all. Whether you were family by blood or bond, or a friend who had nowhere else to go, her door was perpetually open, welcoming everyone with the promise of safety, laughter, and endless support. Bingo nights became a legendary staple once Shirley retired, transforming mundane evenings into thrilling battles of luck and strategy, all accompanied by the sounds of dominoes clattering and the soft murmurs of pinnacle strategy discussions. Shirley's laughter was the melody that played in the background of these gatherings, a testament to her uncanny ability to infuse joy into the simplest moments.
Shirley's relationship with her faith was unique; she embraced Christianity with a personal touch that mirrored her approach to most aspects of her life: somewhat religious, yet profoundly spiritual in her actions and in the love she extended to others.
A touching narrative of Shirley's existence cannot be narrated without mentioning her treasured achievements. Above all, Shirley's family was her world. Her late husband, Luther, and their four children: Kim, Juan, myself—Nicky, and Brian, were the cornerstones of her life. Furthermore, Shirley's legacy is carried forth by her 21 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a spark of her indomitable spirit and kindness.
Shirley's palette of talents was as vibrant and diverse as her personality. Many would be surprised to learn that in her youth, Shirley wasn't just a spectator in life's grand theater but an active participant in its various acts. At Santa Barbara High School, she was a whirlwind of energy and passion: running track with the tenacity of a cheetah, expressing complex emotions through modern dance, and leading parades as a twirl girl with unmatched grace.
The absence of Shirley's physical presence among us leaves a void that was once filled by her radiant energy. "She was the life of every party," wasn't just an idle observation but a living truth. The instant Shirley entered a room, the air seemed to sparkle, anticipation hung palpably, and inevitably, 'She's a Bad Mama Jama' would start playing, heralding her arrival as if she were royalty. Which, in many ways, she was to us.
Today, as we reflect upon Shirley's extraordinary journey through life, let us not dwell on our loss but celebrate the countless ways in which she enriched our lives. Whether through her infectious laughter, her boundless generosity, or her instinctive understanding and empathy, Shirley has left an indelible mark on each of us.
In closing, I extend this eulogy not as a farewell but as a celebration of Shirley—a remarkable woman, a nurturing mother, and a steadfast friend. Her legacy is not confined to the past but will continue to inspire and influence all of us fortunate enough to have known her. As we carry her memory forward, let us honor her by embodying the virtues she lived by: open-hearted generosity, boundless fun, and a deep understanding of the beauty inherent in the connections we share with one another.
Thank you, Shirley, for being a light in our lives. We love you, we miss you, and we will forever carry you in our hearts.
